Life in the Shelter

At St. Jude House, we want you to feel safe, supported, and welcomed from the moment you arrive. Our shelter is a calm, caring place where you can take a breath, rest, and begin healing. Here is what you can expect.

A Safe and Comfortable Place to Stay

Our shelter is designed to help you feel at home.

  • Families have private rooms
  • We provide clean bedding, towels, and basic supplies
  • Common areas—like the kitchen, living room, and children’s spaces—are shared with other families

We work hard to keep the shelter safe, peaceful, and respectful for everyone.

Support from Caring Staff

You are not alone. Our staff is here for you every day.

  • We are here to listen with compassion and support
  • We can support you as you explore the next steps that feel right for you
  • We offer emotional support when things feel hard

Someone is on-site 24/7 to help if you need anything.

Your Daily Life

Life in the shelter offers structure and flexibility to support your needs. Here is what you can expect day to day:

  • You can cook meals in our shared kitchen
  • You can come and go safely and privately
  • You can join support groups or meet one-on-one with an advocate
  • You’re welcome to rest, reflect, or take next steps in whatever way feels right to you

We respect your privacy and your choices.

For Parents and Children

We know that violence can affect everyone in a household. We offer support for both adults and kids.

  • Children and youth have access to play areas, activities, and age-appropriate support
  • Parents receive help with routines, school needs, and emotional support
  • Advocates can work with you and your children together or separately—whatever feels right for you

Your family’s safety and well-being come first.

Your Rights in the Shelter

While staying with us, you have the right to:

  • Feel safe
  • Be treated with respect
  • Have your information kept private
  • Make your own choices
  • Ask for support whenever you need it

We are here to support you, not pressure you.

What You Do Not Need to Worry About

Many survivors worry before coming to shelter. Here are a few things you do not need to have:

  • You do not need money
  • You do not need insurance
  • You do not need to bring anything except yourself — and your children if you have them
  • You do not need to have a plan

We will support you to take the next steps, one at a time.

Working Toward Your Future

We can support you as you explore the future you want.

We can support you with:

  • Housing
  • Jobs and education
  • Legal support
  • Healthcare
  • Safety planning
  • Emotional healing

You do not have to figure everything out at once. We will support you in the ways you choose.
